JOURNEY To juneteenth: The first emancipation
Journey to Juneteenth chronicles the four years between the first Presidential emancipation of enslaved peoples –here in Washington, DC– to the breaking of the final vestiges of Confederate control in Texas. When Union troops reached Galveston, Texas in June 1865, the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was fulfilled. That day became a celebration and is known as Juneteenth.
The end of slavery in the United States marked a second independence; a “new birth of freedom” for four million formerly enslaved people across the nation. This program links emancipation to Juneteenth by way of the United States Colored Troops and stories from DC that helped shape the entire nation. Contains key elements of the Black Broadway and Pennsylvania Ave experiences! Duration: 60 minutes. Online experiences are hosted on Zoom. Internet access is required.
